Put Away and Start Afresh

Creativity Challenge 1998 #17

Graham Wallas told us that Incubation was a key step in creativity. When we have lots of time we can do that. Deadlines demand action, results, creativity on the spot.

Reading a book by famous comedy playwright, Neil Simon this week I came across a quote from famous Broadway director, Mike Nicholas.
This is paraphrase loosely...
"Once you have rewritten and rewritten and rewritten, put it away and start again."

Simon was describing his challenges in writing his first play, "Come Blow Your Horn", coincidentally the very first professional play I took a date to see when I was 18.

He shared further how he continued that process throughout his career. He didn't "throw away". He "put away" and started again. Thus leaving him the option to start fresh, yet also be able to return with a fresh perspective to what was initially put away.

Challenge #17 for you is to practice "putting some creative project away" and starting fresh.

  • choose a different perspective
  • try to think about the project through the mind of a famous person or even a friend.
  • take on the persona of a fictional or cartoon character and work on your project freshly.,
  • reexamine the facts and simply start over.

Have a creative week.
