Coaching and Counseling
Over the past 22 years I have created and presented hour to hour and a half presentations on coaching and counseling in the workplace for companies, corporations, associations and government departments or agencies. Also for a variety of clients I have designed and presented workshops: 1/2 to full day up to 3 days; on coaching and counseling for supervisors and managers. In addition to these I have coached and/or counseled: managers, supervisors, speakers, consultants, designers, artists, architects - face to face, via phone and/or internet.
HOW TO DEVELOP COACHING & COUNSELING SKILLS
READING
1. Reading articles and books about the basic approaches, theories and techniques of coaching and counseling is an excellent beginning for developing skills in coaching and counseling.
WORKSHOPS
2. Attending workshops: 1/2 day to full day to even 3 day long provides you more opportunity to learn a variety of skills, techniques and tools and provides you time to practice them in a safe environment.
WORKING WITH A PROFESSIONAL COACH
3. Taking your professional development further involves one-on-one or small group private coaching and counseling where you focus on specific situations and issues related to you applying your growing knowledge and skills of coaching and counseling.
MENTORING
Mentoring is another of the many ways that people can receive coaching and counseling in their professional lives. Also they can learn specific coaching and counseling skills of their mentors.
Over the next few months I will be placing some introductory materials about both coaching and counseling on this website page in the form of:

GENERAL INFORMATION
Teaching
Helping people expand their knowledge.
Often when we are counseling or coaching people we also need to teach.
When counseling we often need to teach them problem recognizing/finding and problem solving skills.
When coaching we teach them new skills and reteach them old skills that they have forgotten or are not applying successfully.
Training
Helping people expand their practical application of skills and knowledge
When we are counseling or coaching people we also need to train them....share knowledge and help they develop working skills.
When counseling our focus is in training them problem recognizing/finding and problem solving skills.
When coaching our focus is training them in new techniques, methods, systems, skills to add to their existing skills.
Coaching
Helping people with their skills: adding new ones or correcting old ones that are not working.
When we are coaching people we are working with their skill levels.
First we need to determine their current skill level. In some cases we need only refresh their skills that they have not used in a long time. In other cased our goal is to correct errors they are making.
Telling, showing, demonstrating, guiding, illustrating are the primary skills we use when we are coaching.
Counseling
Helping people with their behavior.
When we are counsleing people we are working with their behavior whether conscious or subconscious.
First, we need to develop a relationship of trust.
Second, we need to determine what behaviors are negative or getting in the way of them functioning.
Third, we need to discover which behaviors are deliberate or unconscious.
Listening is one of the primary skills we use when counseling.
Empathesizing not sympathiszing is another primary skill
