A Million Cowboy Stories

Creativity Challenge 1998 #8

Looking for lots of product ideas?

Let the Lone Ranger, Silver, Tonto and Paint help you.

Fred Stryker who wrote the radio series for years used a system often labeled "Morphological Listing" for generating stories and story lines for the daily show.

He created charts that consisted of the variables of a cowboy radio show...
good guys, villains, situations, seasons, weapons, results, etc.

Under each heading he listed as many different examples. Then he numbered each item in each column and posted his finished charts in his writing studio.

At breakfast he asked his wife for a series of random numbers for each category. Then he took the numbers to his studio, looked up what the numbers corresponded to and then combined these items to create a new story.

I have often done this in workshops to demonstrate how no parent ever has to make the same lunch ever for their children.

For example....The parts of a lunch....
bread sandwich filling add-ons fruit snack item soup vegetable dessert

Next list 10 different examples for each of the 8 categories.

The result is 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 100,000,000 possible combinations using only one item from each column.

This week's challenge is to create a Morphological Chart for a new snack food, nutritious or not... First list 6 to 8 categories
Second list up to 10 examples for each
Third pick 3 random combinations of 6 to 8 numbers
Fourth report your 3 new snack food products

For example....coatings, fillings, ingredients, nuts, fruits, shapes, forms (bars, squares, bags, etc.)

You could easily end up with 1,000,000 to 100,000,000 new products to fill our grocery store shelves with.
