Visual Metaphors & Analogies

Creativity Challenge 1998 #26

I just returned from the 44th CPSI and my 18th. This year I participated more than I presented (due to personal reasons). It was great fun and very, very healing for me. Old friends, new friends and lots of creative challenges and fun. I think I picked up at least enough new challenges to complete the whole year this year. So let's start with one.

Tony LeSorti, college professor and consultant, shared many tools for aiding inspiration and generating creativity now. We both had that theme in our individual sessions this year.

First collect a pile of mixed magazines or borrow them from your local doctor's office.

Second choose a challenge or problem.

Third examine the number of pages in the various magazines (128, 150, 225, etc).

Fourth randomly choose 6 different numbers one to 225).

Fifth look up one number, as a page number, and place a Post-It on the page closest to that number page that has an advertisement on it (one per magazine).

Sixth think about how the ad relates to your problem and think up 6 to 12 ideas (1 or 2) per magazine based on the advertisement theme, content, image, wording, appearance.

You might also try this with a group of 4 to 6 people, each taking time to be the "client" that the others generate possible ideas for. This is how Tony did it. It was great fun and very valuable to each of the participants.

Have a creatively fun week.
