Interact to Generate Creative Thoughts

Creativity Challenge 1999 #18

This past week I had both the joy and honor to be part of the first Turkish Creativity Conference in Istanbul, directed by Halim Ergunalp. During our free times I walked many of the streets in the area near our base hotel. While walking I watched and tried to see as much as I could see.

This week's CC is for you to take 15 minutes to 30 minutes each day to walk in a new area and simply observe to see as much as you can see. The exercise can help your powers of observation and at the same time you may collect rich material to use as metaphors to use with your current or future challenges.

Notice the number of people. The way they walk. Notice if they walk alone, in pairs, groups. Notice the patterns and directions of their movement: direct, confident, wandering, daydreaming? Notice what else they do while they walk.

Notice the details of where you walk. Deliberately walk in areas you usually do not walk in.

Stay open to what you can learn from the details and patterns.

One collection of distinct differences I began to learn about the differences between Istanbul drivers and drivers in most American cities I have been in is how during rush hour that they can make a 3 lane road accommodate 5 or 6 lanes of intermeshing traffic with very few horns blown and next to no accidents. It was as if the lane lines totally disappeared. Of course I had an expert chauffeur, Esra Aslan from Istanbul driving me.

Have a great week. Make it as creative as you choose.
