Let's Get Vergent

Cre8ng™ Challenge 2000-07

Divergent, Convergent, Unvergent, Contravergent, Prevergent, Disvergent, Nonvergent, Revergent, Provergent.

In most books on creative thinking and creativity we find the words divergent and convergent as adjectives for types of thinking. Divergent thinking generally is varying, open-ended, expanding and unlimited thinking. Convergent thinking generally is narrowing, analytical, focused, contracting and very limited thinking.

When we brainstorm or generate ideas we diverge. When we are striving to choose a solution we converge from many into one or a single combination of a few to many.

I have found these words very limiting for several years. Too often natural idea generators or conceptual people have demonstrated their dislike for convergent thinking. They seem to see it as negative, critical. They seem to sense that anyone who converges on their long list of divergent ideas as the enemy. The greatest majority of us work in environments or have jobs that require us to be convergent, produce workable creative ideas.

Perhaps it is time to expand or enhance our definitions and also to add more specific terms to our creative thinking dictionaries.

Your challenge this week is to define the following words in respect to their use in creative thinking and creative problem solving or creative solution seeking or selecting.

Divergent, Convergent, Unvergent, Contravergent, Prevergent, Disvergent, Nonvergent, Revergent, Provergent.

Have fun. Be creative with your definitions.

May your creative powers help you greatly this week.
