Walk in Their Shoes/Think in Their Minds

Cre8ng™ Challenge 2000-11

One creative thinking tool/concept written about in this month's, March 2000, Creativity in Action, Creative Education Foundation's newsletter is "reframing".

Primarily reframing is a psychological term for the tool or technique of changing perspective, point of view, vantagepoint, how you look at a situation/problem (among many other terms for it). I am suggesting you use one particular version of "reframing."

This week based on the Native American idea of ãto know someone you need to walk in their moccasins (very paraphrased).

  1. Choose 5 famous, infamous, important people to you.
  2. Monday randomly pick one of them.
  3. Spend 15 to 20 minutes thinking about them.
  4. Then think about what you know about how they think or thought.
  5. Were/are they very rational, imaginative, metaphoric, feeling-oriented, highly systematic?
  6. What do they focus their thinking on? quality, aesthetics, functionality, etc.
  7. How do they approach problem solving? Inductively? Deductively? Reductively? Conductively?

Then during the day when you face a challenge take a few minutes to "be them" in how they would think and approach the same challenge.

Tuesday choose another of the remaining four. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday repeat the process with a different person.

Please report back to me what you experienced. Breakthroughs! Insights! Ahas!

Have a wonderful week.

Alan
