Let's Innovate Other's Creativity

Creativity Challenge 2001 #8

Too often people limit their creativeness by stopping too short when they get what seems like a great idea. I just completed reading a book about Roy Disney, Walt Disney's older brother and partner of over 40 years. The author throughout the book compares Roy and Walt in their idea generating and problem solving styles. Both were obviously highly creative and creative about very different things. Roy focused on the present. Walt focused on the future and beyond. Roy was satisfied with his ideas if they worked close to his goal. Walt never let his present skills or the skills of his employees to stop his ideas. To Walt nearly nothing was ever truly finished. Even as Disneyland was within hours of opening in the 1950s he was changing things constantly trying to create what he had seen in his mind.

Let's practice thinking like Walt Disney this week.

Each day find a dozen ideas and think of a dozen others taking the initial ideas into the future. Do not let any known limitations stop you. Accept that with enough research resources, tools, processes, techniques, answers will be found to make your future ideas workable.

MONDAY Find the initial ideas around your house.

TUESDAY Find the initial ideas at work or school.

WEDNESDAY Find the initial ideas in a newspaper.

THURSDAY Find the initial ideas in a magazine you do not normally read or look at.

FRIDAY Find the initial ideas in the environment around you or go visit a large store or shopping center.

May your week be filled with much creativity.
