Using the Library Shelves

Creativity Challenge 2002 #03

Hope your year is going well already. Many of us collect libraries, varying in size, and many of the books go unused for long periods of time. This week let's use them. Start out by looking through your shelves, piles or boxes of books and randomly picking 5 sets/piles of books 6 to 12 in each pile. Then each day use one set of the books. I encourage you to mix fiction with non-fiction, children's with adult books, topics. I suggest that you use the same challenge to work on each day or a simple practice exercise such as generating new possible uses for ______ (choose an object).

MONDAY
Using one book at a time randomly flip through each book and mark 3 to 6 pages with Post-Itô notes or scrap paper. Then go back and open the books to each mark 3 to 6 pages with Post-Itô notes or scrap paper. Then go back and open the books to each marked page and with your eyes closed point at a spot on each page. Open your eyes and write down the first VERB you find. Once you have done this with each page use your randomly found VERBS to generate ideas.

TUESDAY
Using one book at a time randomly flip through each book and mark 3 to 6 pages with Post-Itô notes or scrap paper. Then go back and open the books to each marked page and with your eyes closed point at a spot on each page. Open your eyes and write down the first NOUN you find. Once you have done this with each page use your randomly found NOUNS to generate ideas.

WEDNESDAY
Using one book at a time randomly flip through each book and mark 3 to 6 pages with Post-Itô notes or scrap paper. Then go back and open the books to each marked page and read one paragraph.  Once you have read the paragraph try to apply the content/message to your challenge to generate ideas.

THURSDAY
Using one book at a time randomly flip through each book and mark 3 to 6 pages with Post-Itô notes or scrap paper. Then go back and open the books to each marked page and read one sentence. Once you have read the sentence try to apply the content/message to your challenge to generate ideas. Reading it backwards might help also.

FRIDAY
Using one book at a time scan the index in reverse (z to a) with the thought how might I? generate ideas for _____. How might that help me with my challenge _______. Let these external stimlui help you change perspecives, viewpoints, mindsets and generate new approaches to your challenges or ideas just for practice.

Have a great week!

Alan
