Box, Out of, No Box, New Box Thinking

Creativity Challenge 2002 #46

The past few weeks the cliché, "OUT OF THE BOX", so often connected to creativity and innovation, has been used over and over and over again on television shows, news reports and interviews, articles, movies and radio shows and in many conversations I have overheard including a dinner meeting involving myself, a partner and one of our client contact people.

This week let's take advantage of the metaphor, the cliché of a box to spark some creative thinking.

According to my copy of the American Heritage Dictionary,

box a rectangular container, often with a lid. A separated compartment for a small group (theater), a booth, an awkward situation, to place in or as if in a box.

Generally people refer to "out of the box" thinking as thinking that is not normal, typical, generally accepted, not conventional wisdom.

Let's play with the "box" concept this week.

MONDAY
Spend your creative development/exercise time thinking and listing every way you are or feel like you are in a box currently.

TUESDAY
Spend your creative development/exercise time thinking and listing every box that other people seem to be in currently.

WEDNESDAY
Spend your creative development/exercise time thinking and listing ways you could benefit if you were inside the "boxes" other people believe they are in.

THURSDAY
Spend your creative development/exercise time thinking and listing how you could benefit being outside of all the "boxes" you currently are in.

FRIDAY
Spend your creative development/exercise time thinking and listing what benefits other people who are outside of your "boxes" think you experience inside of those "boxes".

Next week we'll focus on New Boxes, No Boxes, Imaginary Boxes

Have a great and creative week.

Alan
