Get Out of Line

Creativity Challenge 1998 #23

One book that has had an impact on me each time I have read it is TAKING CHANCES: Lessons in Putting Passion and Creativity into your Work Life by Dale Dauten published by Pocket Books, 1986, ISBN0-671-64434-3.

He begins with a quote from Samuel Johnson

No (one) ever became great by Imitation.

In chapter one he tells a story about a person standing in line. Way back in an endless line. After awhile the person questions why the line. What is the line for?

So the person steps out of the line and walks further up the line asking people why are they standing in the line. They have no specific answer other than everyone is standing in the line, that is what people do.

Eventually he reaches towards the head of the line and decides that the line leads nowhere he/she wants to go. So he/she leaves the line to travel his/her own journey through life.

In Chapter 4, The Idea Ranch, Dale says...

If you want to learn history, put yourself in the shoes of great (people), if you want to make history, put great (people) in your shoes.

Your challenge this week, if you accept it, is in two parts. A) Examine what "lines" going, apparently, nowhere you are standing in (figuratively). Think about why and where else you would rather be headed and how you will in the next 12 months. B) Think about 6 great people you might put in your shoes to help you make history and why.

Have fun. To enrich, expand and develop your creativeness you need only use it.

Have a creative week.
