"Using Your Mind's Eye"

Creativity Challenge 1999 #46

This one was inspired by glancing through an old favorite creative thinking book: WAKE UP YOUR CREATIVE GENIUS by Kurt Hanks and Jay A. Parry, published initially in 1983 by William Kaufmann, Inc. Now probably available from 10 Speed Press along with many other excellent creativity and creative books.

"Using Your Mind's Eye" p. 125-126
Einstein thought more often in images than in words. Tesla saw moving inventions in his head (mind's eye). Henry Kaiser mentally saw the outcome of most of his projects. Mozart composed entire scores in his mind.

Each day find time to sit quietly and uninterrupted for 15 to 20 minutes and "watch, listen or sense" what you "Mind's Eye" can do.

Think of family members or friends from the past. Focus on the images or results you get through your Mind's Eye.

Some of you will see very vivid pictures. Others will see flashing images or blurred pictures. Still others may not see images at all. Instead you may hear sounds, smells odors, taste tastes. Even others may experience no sensory result at all. Instead you will abstractly think/imagine.

One practice exercise I use in workshops is to have people get in a relaxed position: sitting or laying down. Then I ask them to recall a tree from their life. First as if they are standing 50 feet away so they can see the whole height of the tree. Second in about 15 to 20 seconds move up to about 10 feet away, close enough to experience detail or recall what you might be able to see at that distance. Third, move up to the tree in your imagination and experience it's touch and very close detail. Fourth, move away again to about 50 feet and turn in your imagination completely around and see or recall what surrounds or surrounded that tree.

Because creative people "see" and "believe" they can usually "achieve" or can lead others to "achieve" what was "seen".

Have a great week! Make it as creative as you choose.
