The "Brown Hat"©

Creativity Challenge 1999 #45

Edward de Bono created his very useful team creative thinking tool, "Six Hats"* several years ago. Generally it appears to thoroughly or completely deal with all of the necessary aspects of group/team thinking that need to be dealt with. The system is very helpful in keeping people focused in meetings so that the thinking, communication and actions are not muddled or unnecessarily confused.

During a mental play time in October this year with two of my creativity consultant friends from Manhattan, Andre de Zanger and Judy Morgan, while we were travelling together by car through northeastern South Africa and through Krueger National Game Park, I threw out the concept of adding a 7th hat to de Bono's system that ought to be used during meetings to make them even more valuable and productive. We had fun passing it around and playing with its contents.

Most meetings that I have experienced throughout my worklife that were not productive, effective or creatively beneficial I suspect would or could have been made more valuable if we had passed around the "Brown Hat" first or periodically when the tension rose.

Your challenge this week is to carry a notebook, pad, index cards or other note recording devise with you to meetings or gathering of people: fellow workers, clients, opponents (lawyers, government officials, police, etc.), family or friends. During the meetings or gatherings or immediately after they breakup take a couple minutes to record all of the items that could have been put into the "Brown Hat" and probably made the meeting or gathering much more valuable if the potential conflict had been dealt with honestly and resolved right then instead of being swept under the rug, avoided, or covered over by more dishonest manure.

Towards the end of the week or daily after you have recorded the "Brown Hat" items think or create ways that the Brown Hat items might be or could have been turned into valuable fertilizer.

If sad memories return and make the exercise painful choose to grow from the experience or stop and start again the next day with things you might do that would be fun, exciting, wonderful, fantastic, enjoyable, creative things next week or the week after.

Have fun with this challenge.

May you increase your creativeness and creative thinking this week every day.
