WOW That's Boringly Weird & Been Tried Before

Creativity Challenge 2000 #45

Diverge, Diverge, Diverge. That's what many of my creativity friends swear I do all the time. In fact at CPSI a few years ago while I was co-converging with another CPSI leader one of my friends broke into laughter. Later he told me why. He had never seen me converge before.

Generating hundreds of ideas is often the easiest part of creative problem solving or creative solution generating (my preferred term). This week and for the next few weeks let's practice on various ways we can converge our diverge lists of ideas to workable and commitable ideas/solutions.

Each day this week be on the look out for ideas. Do not use lists of ideas you have already generated. Do not use your own ideas. Simply collect them during the day. Collect them from....

1. newspapers
2. magazines
3. books
4. news broadcasts...tv/radio/web
5. over heard conversations
6. advertising...print to outdoor

Then after you have collected 12 to 24 ideas each day take a couple minutes to quickly CONVERGE. Narrow them down using the following system. Please do not evaluate them against each other. Simply look at the ideas one by one and use the five classifications to classify them. Your goal is to practice classifying not criticizing them. When we criticize ideas we lose many potentially good to great ideas that aren't ready to be used or worked on yet.

Each day collect a different collection of ideas. Then classify them. a. weird f. WOW! q. tried before x. workable z. boring (not exciting rather than necessarily bad)

Monday
new product ideas

Tuesday
new book titles

Wednesday
television shows

Thursday
movies

Friday
social problem ideas

Collect them randomly. Try not to select. Instead collect or gather. When we select we tend to evaluate, judge, criticize. The purpose of this Challenge is to practice non-judgemental classfication as a CONVERGING tool not simply another way to criticize or judge ideas.

Have a great week if you choose to do so. I hope you will.
