Adventurous Creative Touring

Creativity Challenge 2001 #12

This past week I was in Buffalo for the annual Mid-Year CPSI Leader Planning Weekend. This year's was held at the site of this year's 47th CPSI-2001, the Adams' Mark Hotel in downtown Buffalo, New York.

I went in a day early and stayed after for 1/2 a day so I could tour and experience Buffalo in ways I haven't before in the 20+ years I have been attending CPSI. Using my feet, busses and part of the subway/light rail train I ventured throughout downtown Buffalo and out along Elmwood Avenue.

I went with tentative plans to see specific things and to experience things as I travelled that I didn't know existed.

This sparks the following Creativity Challenge for you.

Each day this week or one day this week take time to tour your town or city or one near you in places you have never gone before.

Experience the architecture, the street scenes, an event taking place (I experienced the famous Buffalo St. Patrick's Day Parade at the waiting area, beginning of the parade),

Stop in your tourist/convention bureau and learn about your town,

Stop in your Chamber of Commerce and pretend you are a visitor.

Attend a play, a musical performance (professional, amateur, school).

Visit an art gallery.

Attend a poetry reading.

To reinforce the creative thinking value of your experiences take along a challenge you have and let your experiences sever as metaphors or idea sparkers for your challenge. Take a notebook and ask yourself periodically what this building might suggest about my challenge or what a particular painting, garden, theatre, play, music, etc.

Enjoy your environment through all your senses as much as you can.

Have a fantastic week.
