Creatively Combining Cultures

Creativity Challenge 2001 #48

While I was in northern Arizona this past week I visited the Grand Canyon, traveled through vast landscapes, forests, drove over mountains, climbed Cathedral Rock, walked through gorges, watched sunrises and sunsets in various locations from my friends' home deck in Prescott to the edge of the south rim of the Grand Canyon to the patio of my hotel room in Sedona, walked through several galleries, museums and shops in Prescott, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and Jerome, Arizona. I purchased some Christmas gifts, postcards, small personal collectibles, a small sand painting and books on Hopi Art, Navaho weavings and rugs.

While flying home across the country I began reading the book on Hopi Art. Throughout the book the two Anglo authors and great fans and collectors of Hopi Art continually mentioned how thoroughly creativity and art are woven and supported through the Hopi culture. Everyone is encouraged to paint, sculpt, carve, make ceramics and most do.

This week Challenge yourself to combine cultures to explore how you might expand and enrich your creativity.

You may do this by reading books, watching tapes, movies, television shows, talking to people from the cultures, exploring the web or possibly other ways.

Each day choose a culture from a different continent

Monday - North America

Tuesday - South America

Wednesday - Asia

Thursday - Europe

Friday - Africa

Then explore the creativity in that country and culture.

Have fun combining cultures to enrich and expand your creativity.

Alan
