It Ain't Just Was It Seems

Creativity Challenge 2001 #49

This Creativity Challenge was sparked by reading in one of the last books by Charles Kuralt, television correspondent, who focused on people as people for many years as his subject to report on (American Moments, ISBN:0-684-85903-3. The book consists of the written versions of a 90-second per spot radio show he put together based on travels around the United States. In print the stories are 1 to 2 or 2 1/2 pages long.

"Antonio Pasin, once of Italy, then of Chicago, figured he could make wagons the way Henry Ford made cars--efficiently on an assembly line." (1918)

His question was:

"can a sheet of metal make a child happy? Well, no."

"But stamp that sheet of metal into a certain shape, refine it a little, then paint it and stencil the right name on its side--now your sheet of metal can make a child happy."

The result a "Radio Flyer" red wagon.

Your Creativity Challenge this week is to conceptualize things that "could make a child happy" using some of the processes you list in CC-47 and CC-48.

MONDAY - What might be made from a sheet of plastic to make a child happy?

TUESDAY - What might be made from a sheet of glass to make a child happy?

WEDNESDAY - What might be made from a sheet of fabric to make a child happy?

THURSDAY - What might be made from a sheet of plywood to make a child happy?

FRIDAY - What might be made from a sheet of aluminum foil to make a child happy?

Challenge yourself to be fluent (list many ideas), flexible (list many different kinds of ideas), elaborate (imagine lots of details), original (create new ideas instead of revisions or innovations of existing ones)

Have fun playing Kris Kringle, Santa Claus, Father Christmas, etc. Imagine yourself with an unlimited workshop in which you have access to the machinery and technology to apply any process you can think of or that haven't been thought of yet.

Happy Holidays

Alan
