Choosing to Be Habitually Inhabitual

Creativity Challenge 2002 #09

One of my first lessons gained from the Creativity Problem Solving Institute in Buffalo was to examine my habits periodically and deliberately break or alter them. That is your daily challenge for this week.

Begin each day by taking 15 minutes to list some of your habits. Then choose 3 to 6 of them to alter, avoid or break. Please choose ones that will not cause pain or havoc for other people or yourself. I.E.: continue to drive or ride on the same side of the road as your country does normally.

Questions to ask to generate a long list of habits. When hand do you use most of the time? right, left Which foot do you use first most of the time? Examine your eating habits and routines. Do you eat certain courses or foods in a particular order?

Do you sit in the same seat on the bus, in the car (when riding as a passenger), on the train or in an airplane? If so, then deliberately choose to sit in new or different ones this week.

Do you organize any of your work surfaces the same way? at work? at school? at home? If so deliberately choose to rearrange them in new ways this week.

Sleep on a different side or end of the bed.

Put your clothes on in different order. This doesn't mean to put your under garments on the outside and the outer garments on the underside.

As you experiment with your traditions, routines, habits make notes about how changing them, alternating, reversing, mixing them up feels. What new results did you discover during the week? Have fun.

Choose to be different this week.

Alan
