It's Where the Action Is

Creativity Challenge 2002 #08

A new writing exercise I learned this weekend involves listing verbs to help prep yourself for writing. This week's challenge was sparked by the experience.

MONDAY
Pick up a newspaper and randomly select an article on the front page of any section. Then read to discover what the main issue is. Then list as many verbs you can think of that in any way relate to it.
i.e.: In the writing workshop I was in we were asked to list all the verbs that have anything to do with cooking: steaming, frying, frosting, defrosting, ..., etc.

TUESDAY
Pick up a magazine you normally do not read. Open it up to the middle and find a subject in one of the articles and then list every verb you can think of related to it.
i.e: Hot Rod Cars: racing, driving, stopping, screaming, screeching, ... , etc.

WEDNESDAY
Grab a book off a shelf without looking at it's title. Select a page in the middle and find a subject on the left hand page. Then list every verb you can related to it.

THURSDAY
While watching a favorite television show pick the second commercial and generate as many verbs that might, I stress might, relate to the product.

FRIDAY
While listening to the radio select the 7th commercial and generate as many verbs that might, I stress might, relate to the product. On each list stretch yourself and try not to repeat very many of the verbs.

Have fun creating this week.

Alan
