Altered States of Consciousness-non-drug induced

Creativity Challenge 2002 #22

As I awoke from sleep this morning my mind was racing during that state between sleep and being awake. Several ideas flash through my mind. Too often when I wake I get up immediately and lose this state of mind/altered state of normal consciousness.

When I was a doctoral student I came across an article about altered states of consciousness by Stanley Krippner, where he listed 19 separate states of altered or other than consciousness: dreaming, reverie, ecstasy, flow, etc. I spent the last 20 to 30 minutes searching the world wide web through Google unsuccessfully. My goal was to list the 19 for you.

Alas, I will search it out other ways and share later.

This week my suggested challenge is for you to take advantage of two of the states that I can remember the descriptions but not the Greek or Latin words for. 1) stage between fully aware and sleep and 2) the stage between sleep and fully awake. Both according to Stanley Krippner, Charles Tart, Jean Houston and many other writers since the 70s are very creatively rich states of mind.

This week place a pad of paper or tape recorder next to your bed. As you are about to go to sleep and you enter that peaceful state just before falling asleep if ideas begin to flow focus on them, watch them, hear them and deliberately stop and write them down. One draw back is that if you focus too much you may cause stress and cause yourself to stay awake later than normal.

As you gradually awake without an alarm clock or other external means and you find yourself in that state between sleep and being wake allow yourself to enjoy the ideas watching, hearing them while focusing on them and then write them down as soon as possible.

In either case do not bolt up. Allow yourself to flow with the state while you are focusing on the ideas that are developing or occurring.

Definitely write them down.

Choose to be creative this week.
