Combining Symbols

Creativity Challenge 2002 #23

Pshew it is hot here in Athens, Georgia today. I just spent the past week in Mexico City and it was absolutely beautiful. Mildly warm in the daytime and cool in the evening. Here it is hot, hot, dammmmmmmmn hot (said like Robin Williams in Good Morning Viet Nam).

This week let's experiment with 2-dimensional symbols as idea sparkers.

Pick up some newspapers and magazines and gather a collection of logos from companies. Gather 12 to 24 of them. Pick the most different ones you can.

First choose a challenge from the following list randomly by picking a number first. 1. preventing hoof and mouth disease spread from one country to another 2. designing a festival fireworks display 3. redesigning the office layout of a large company 4. designing a floral garden 5. laying out a totally new grocery store 6. creating line extensions for existing paper products (you choose one the initial one) 7. collecting taxes 8. designing a new hospital

First put your collection of 12 to 24 logos into a box, bag or envelope.

Second, draw out two different ones.

Third, describe the logo: shape, color, shades, directions of lines, the type of typeface used, what it might mean.

Fourth, combine the aspects of the logo with a randomly chosen problem (1-8) and generate possible ideas for solving the problem, at least a small part of it.

I.E.: your logo may have a rainbow of colors and be all geometric with only sharp corners and ninety degree corners that are overlapped or twisted.

You choose #3

redesigning an office layout a. use colored panels to distinguish one office from another in a combination of rainbow colors b. twist the arrangement of the cubicles or offices to create unique open spaces for landscaping.

Each day this week choose two symbols, describe them. Then choose a problem by number randomly. Then combine the aspects, characteristics or traits of the symbols to generate potential ideas to solve the problem.

Have a creative week. You deserve it.

Alan
