Those 300 Horses Ain't What They Used To Be

Creativity Challenge 1999 #24

Everyone of us have daily challenges that seem to be unsolvable. This challenge was sparked by a friend's recent challenge. He (Lou Boncek) recently drove many miles to retrieve his daughter's automobile. The car is fine except for one minor thing....the engine is blown. When he shared that information with me in an email I wrote back suggesting that he come up with 101 uses for a blown engine. He in exchange suggested that it become a Creativity Challenge. Here goes.

Beginning with a blown engine. You assume whatever details you need to describe what that means. Please try not to analyze the situation simply let your mind go. If you use left-brain, analytical approaches please do not let practicality or engineering or manufacturing get in the way. Use these only as jumping off places for ideas.

Take 15 minutes each morning and jot down as many varied possible uses for a "blown car engine". Set your goal at 6 to 12 per day for 5 days.

During the day or at a meal time each day bring up the challenge and ask a different person or small group of people (strangers, friends or relatives) for their suggested ideas. Please tell them that you are only looking for ideas not necessarily practical, provable, absolutely workable solutions...just as many creative and unique ideas as you can collect. Please encourage them not to discuss the problem or ask questions, simply throw out any and all ideas that come to them. Any details they can assume or imagine themselves but suggest that they not spend the time doing that.

The purpose of this Challenge is to practice idea generation only (for de Bono folks...Green Hat Thinking or lateral thinking in general). Be practical if you choose. Be wild and strange if you choose. Choose to think outside of ALL and every box. Think off the wall. If a question or limitation comes into your mind, thank it and let it pass on and get back to idea generating.

Focus on generating ideas.

Have a wonderful week. Choose to be creative. Choose to support other people's creativity this week.
