Tisket a Tasket, What's in Your Basket

Creativity Challenge 2001 #44

One of the purposes of the various Creativity Challenges I have shared; whether mine, inspired by other's or other's from their books; has been to provide ways for each of us to prepare our minds to find creativity and be more open to immediate creative sparks from our environment: consciously or unconsciously.

This week's was sparked in that manner. On Thursday, while asking a question I noticed cellophane wrapped baskets on a shelf in a friend's office. When I asked her whether they were gifts she received or was about to give, she said "I make them".

That sparked the idea to have her wrap the many different "elephants" I collected this Summer for my daughter to add to her world-wide collection of elephant figurines. I was already about to give them to my daughter on Friday evening. Instead of merely wrapping them in newspaper or decorative wrapping paper I decided that such baskets would be more creative and more fun. They would involve someone else's creativity to help spark my daughter's.

This week let your various environments spark your creativity.

First, start by making a list of many things you want or need to accomplish during the next 5 or 7 days or possibly longer. Let your list include small to large challenges. Let your lists include personal, professional, family, friend, community and so on challenges.

Second, carry your list with you all week to refer to periodically during waiting times. Third, carry index cards, Post-It (tm) Notes, a note pad, a Palm Pilot (tm) with you at all times.

Fourth, when you enter a store, an office, a classroom, a building, a courtyard, a garden, scan the spaces with your various senses deliberately seeking creative sparks, clues, links, examples of creativeness.

Fifth, write down everything that you notice.

Sixth, periodically during the day or at the end of the day compare the "creative sparks, clues, links, examples of creativeness" with your "challenges list" and discover what ideas you have "collected in your cellophane baskets".

Have fun. Let creativity find you. Let other's creativity help you. Discover creativity everywhere you go and are.

Alan
