Getting Rid of Bugs

Creativity Challenge 2002 #29

This week I have been reading Tom Kelley's book: THE ART OF INNOVATION, which is about IDEO, an idea and product design company that has received a great deal of recognition over the past couple years, especially since Nightline ran a program in February, 1999 about them designing a grocery shopping cart in one week.

So far I have read about 1/3 of it and have enjoyed learning about the history of their company and some of their techniques and approaches as designers and problem solvers.

One Tom talks about is searching for what "BUG's" you.  That sparked this week's CC.  When IDEO begins to work on a project often they begin by asking themselves individually and jointly what currently BUGS them or has "Bugged" them about the problem or project.

Rather than spending just 15 to 30 minutes per day practicing a Creativity Challenge or Creative Thinking Trait or Skill let's try to be creatively observant through all our senses throughout this week.

MONDAY
What BUGS you about transportation in your community?

TUESDAY
What BUGS you about recreation in your community?

WEDNESDAY
What BUGS you about the customer service you receive?

THURSDAY
What BUGS you about today's movies?

FRIDAY
What BUGS you about the clothing you wear?

Look for small details, big details, how things operate, how things function, how they might be better, more available.

Another overall challenge for this CC is what might the word B.U.G.S. stand for that would encourage you to look for things that might be improved, revised, removed, stopped, started, etc.?

Best wishes for a wonderfully creative week.

Alan
